Academic

I did some Gradpoint.  I had a headache.

Thought for the day
"explain the seasons and why we see a full moon or a quarter moon."

Discussion

Steve showed me a video about the seasons and phases of the moon.   Some Harvard graduates could not explain accurately why the seasons happen.   The video is called "a private universe" because there is a part of us that doesn't learn very deeply.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrXaQu_qGeo
You can see it at this quicklink
TINYURL.com/sunmoonmistake

some Harvard graduates say "the earth goes around the sun and it gets hotter when the earth is closer to the sun and it gets colder when the earth is farther away from the sun."

I really like the face of the teacher who sees that her student explains the moon going in curly orbits.  The teacher was shocked.
The student talks about the sun and the earth and I got confused listening to her.

The teacher Ms. LaBossiere was really nice to include herself in the video.  The video shows that some inaccurate ideas stick inside students after the details from the textbook have been forgotten.

"it's winter when the sun rays are direct and it is summer when the sun rays are indirect."  See Minute 6 and 7 for this information.

The subtitle is "misconceptions that block learning."

I met with my teacher, Steve, and we set goals for working more with Gradpoint.

Quote for Today

"We usually get what we anticipate"

Discussion about the Quote
When Steve showed me this quote, I was thinking about "if you can see it, then you can be it."  If a person can see themselves become a doctor, then they can take the steps to get there.

In my life, I can give this example...

March 15, 2017 Theme for today: Lucky Accidents

Academic Work for today

Quote for Today
"Great discoveries, lucky accidents and the prepared mind."

Discussion about the Quote

If you have been educated and if you know a lot, then when something unusual happens, you will be able to respond to it.  Steve told me a story about how penicillin was discovered ... mold from an old sandwich had fallen in a bacteria experiment and killed the bacteria in the dish.  Instead of throwing away the experiment, the scientist was prepared  and made a discovery:  penicillin.

People might miss out on what they could have had.  They get a good life, but they could have worked a little bit harder to get a great life.

Academic Activity: Steve showed me the following website tinyurl.com/tonywagner7skills

Thought for the day:In the new global economy, with many jobs being either automated or “off-shored,” what skills will students need to build successful careers? What skills will they need to be good citizens? Are these two education goals in conflict?
To examine these questions, I conducted research beginning with conversations with several hundred business, nonprofit, philanthropic, and education leaders. With a clearer picture of the skills young people need, I then set out to learn whether U.S. schools are teaching and testing the skills that matter most. I observed classrooms in some of the nation’s most highly regarded suburban schools to find out whether our “best” was, in fact, good enough for our children’s
future. What I discovered on this journey may surprise you.

The Schooling Students Need

One of my first conversations was with Clay Parker, president of the Chemical Management Division of BOC Edwards—a company that, among other things, makes machines and supplies chemicals for the manufacture of microelectronics devices. He’s an engineer by training and the head of a technical business, so when I asked him about the skills he looks for when he hires young people, I was taken aback by his answer.
“First and foremost, I look for someone who asks good questions,” Parker responded. “We can teach them the technical stuff, but we can’t teach them how to ask good questions—how to think.”
“What other skills are you looking for?” I asked, expecting that he’d jump quickly to content expertise.
I want people who can engage in good discussion—who can look me in the eye and have a give and take. All of our work is done in teams. You have to know how to work well with others. But you also have to know how to engage customers—to find out what their needs are. If you can’t engage others, then you won’t learn what you need to know.”
I initially doubted whether Parker’s views were representative of business leaders in general. But after interviewing leaders in settings from Apple to Unilever to the U.S. Army and reviewing the research on workplace skills, I came to understand that the world of work has changed profoundly.
Today’s students need to master seven survival skills to thrive in the new world of work. And these skills are the same ones that will enable students to become productive citizens who contribute to solving some of the most pressing issues we face in the 21st century.

Academic Activities for today: Today I will be relearning different Spanish phrases and how to respond to them. Since the Spanish language is not completely new to me, relearning some phrases shouldn't prove to be difficult at all.   I looked at some of the posters and weekly reminders prepared by Steve.

Phrase for the day: Cuando Cierra la escuela?    When does the school close

Thought for the day: "One-third of the jobs that will be around ten to fifteen years from now haven't been invented yet. We must educate our children in what no one knew yesterday and prepare our schools for what no one knows yet."

I looked at the goals of keenschool.org and I was very interested in this sentence "many of the skills that you and I are after lead to a better life". This got me thinking about what skills do I need to live a better life.
